  • Played club ball for the Northridge Juniors at Pierce College and won the state championship twice.
  • Coached the 16s Mizuno Long Beach to gold in the Open Division at the JOs.
  • Assistant coach for the Junior Olympics 2022 18s USA gold medal team from the Sunshine Volleyball Club.

  • Playing setter in 2022, he and his teammates won the NAGVA Championship.

About derek

Derek Saenz began playing volleyball at Granada Hills High School. He also played club ball for the Northridge Juniors before graduating from high school. He continued playing at Pierce College where his team won the state championship twice. He finished his BA in Philosophy in 2004 at CSUN.

He started the Shock Volleyball Club in Thousand Oaks in 2004, his 14s winning a bronze medal at the JOs. In 2011 he coached the 16s Mizuno Long Beach to gold in the Open Division at the JOs.

Derek took over the Malibu High School boys and girls volleyball programs in 2018. He was named 2021/2022 Citrus Coast League Coach of the Year; coaching the first two players from Malibu High School to be named to the All-CIF team. Derek was the assistant coach for the Junior Olympics 2022 18s USA gold medal team from the Sunshine Volleyball Club. He is the head coach for two of the Malibu teams, 14s and 17s.

Derek’s coaching philosophy is that when athletes learn how to be teammates, how to be detailed oriented, and are motivated by the right things, winning will take care of itself. He loves helping young people chase their dreams and achieve their goals; it’s a new experience with every new player. When he isn’t coaching Derek still plays volleyball, and wins; playing setter in 2022, he and his teammates won the NAGVA Championship.
