About alex

Alex Chigas grew-up in the suburbs of Chicago where he played volleyball for Oak Lawn Community High School and the Ultimate Volleyball Club. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BS in Statistics. While attending university Alex worked as a line judge for Big10 Women’s Volleyball.

He coached for the PrimeTime VC in Champaign, IL (2011-2012) and for the Acers VC in Madison, WI (2012-2014. Currently he is the head coach of the JV volleyball team and the assistant coach for the varsity at Windward School. This is Alex’s second year as a Sunshine VC coach.

Alex’s coaching philosophy is mostly based on the “mental game.” He puts a heavy emphasis on what the team is doing when they don’t have the ball, this translates into better movement, ball control, and overall awareness.

Alex cloves coaching because it gives him the opportunity to work with young athletes, share his experience, and see them excel at the sport. Helping the players learn teamwork and increase their self-confidence are always two of his coaching goals. He wants to ensure that his teams leave the club season as better athletes and as better people.

He still plays in both sand and indoor tournaments. Away from volleyball Alex still enjoys competition; running in four half marathons, playing tennis regularly, and his favorite board games, Wingspan and Ticket to Ride.

“Champions keep playing until they get it right.“
