About Madison

Madison is in his 4th season coaching club volleyball, where he’s coached open level 1s teams for girls and boys in the 15-18 age groups. He specializes in working with pin hitters and liberos who want to ready their game for the college level.

Prior to coaching, Madison was an All-American Outside Hitter at Stanford University, and won club championships playing professionally in Sweden and England.

Madison’s Coaching Philosophy:

With hitters I place a large emphasis on developing and broadening their toolbox of attacking options so they can find ways to get kills in different situations with different arm speeds and hand angles. Try to help them figure out the different ways they can use big blocks instead
of avoiding them. We spend time making sure the players’ throwing/hitting motion is good from the ground up so they’re using torque to generate power and not piking. We think about approaching as “slow to fast” with an always explosive and athletic step-close.

I want passers to think about just presenting the platform at the right angle, and letting physics take care of the rest. Passing is all about creating and holding the correct angle by keeping space between the body and platform. We’ll focus on ways to open hips and contort the body to be able to create the correct angle in difficult passing situations.

On defense, I teach reading our blockers and the hitter to position correctly on the court. We’ll work on scoop & one-handed moves that the best liberos in the world are using to dig hard driven balls.
