About Kelly

Kelly Kawashima graduated from Cal State – Long Beach (magna cum laude) in 2008 with a BA in Kinesiology and in 2010 acquired her California teaching credential. Prior to attending Long Beach, she played volleyball for El Camino Community College for three years, her team won the conference title all three years.

In 2005 she started coaching club volleyball and has been the head coach at the Culver Volleyball Club, Beach Cities Volleyball Club, and the TCA Volleyball Club, coaching all ages from 12 to 18. Kelly began coaching for the Sunshine Volleyball Club in 2014. Her South Bay 16s went undefeated and won the gold medal at the Junior Olympics in 2015.

Her coaching philosophy follows five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and leadership. She believes teaching the multiple aspects of these values builds character and confidence, as well as providing a sense of accomplishment to the athletes.

Kelly has been in love with volleyball since she began playing in middle school. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge of the game with her players and being a positive role model for them.

While being a native Californian, Kelly’s family is from Hawaii, and she enjoys visiting there whenever possible. On weekends Kelly plays indoor volleyball in a coed league and beach volleyball. She recently discovered a new hobby, flipping/restoring furniture.

“Being nervous is not something you should be ashamed of.

Nervous means you care, you really want to do well.“

“You make your own luck.
You make it in training.”
